RAMESES III - Honey Rose - CDep
imprec126 - CDep - $7.99
Rameses III are architects of the most beautiful swathes
of blissful ambience whose releases have previously found homes
on labels like Celebrate Psi Phenomenon, Music Fellowship,
Scarcelight, MYMWLY, Barl Fire and Type.
On Honey Rose, the groups first release for Important,
the South London trio build a bucolic soundtrack to Jon Spiras
mysterious short film Suityman. Whilst the influence
of Bruce Langhorne, Boxhead Ensemble and much of the
4AD roster can be keenly felt on this six song EP, so too
can the wondrous drone narratives that are such a feature of Rameses
IIIs previous works. More structured and melodious then much
of their output, Honey Rose is the perfect place for a newcomer
to begin exploring the music of one of the finest purveyors of ambient
drone operating in music today.

Let's get this straight immediately. Anoice
is not another instumental group with strong rock tendencies
and an armchair association with classical music. Unlike numerous
contemporaries which they will undoubtedly be compared to,
their goal is not to follow the trends and make the soft/loud/soft/loud
juxtapositions in every song, but to carefully craft each
song with a strong attention to melody, solid accompaniment,
and courteous counterpoint. Six panel digipack design by Non-Format

When
UK-native James Blackshaw plays his 12-string, something
spiritual takes place. This unassuming 23 year-old is transformed
into a guitar god whose name belongs alongside the likes of
Jack Rose, Steffen Basho-Junghans, and Glenn
Jones.
In these part improvised and part written songs,
Blackshaw traverses between Eastern and Western scales;
simple and incredibly intricate picking patterns; waves of fast,
powerful rolls and glass-fragile harmonics. The album is occasionally
embellished with other instruments such as the Hindustani
tamboura and harmonium and a specially tuned psaltery
of Eastern-European origin called a Cymbala |
