Northern Stains is the result of a collaboration
between experimental phenomenon Carlos Giffoni and Spunk/Fe-Mail
members Maja Ratkje & Hild Tafjord. This trio finally
met when Giffoni booked Fe-Mail to headline the sunday night
of his genere defining Brooklyn based 3 day No Fun Festival
in 2005. Early in 2006 Giffoni boarded a flight to Norway
and Northern Stains was born in Spunk's Oslo studio.(more)

Welcome
Home is less of a homecoming and more of a coming out for
Carlos Giffoni, a highly respected and active NYC collaborator
who typically shares the stage and records with the likes of
Jim O'Rourke, Nels Cline, Chris Corsano,
John Duncan, Massimo, Thurson Moore and
many others. Giffoni has long been the experimentalists
experimentalist and now on Welcome Home, his first official
full length, finds him center stage where he belongs. |

Together Chris Corsano and Paul
Flaherty have re-written the concept of modern free-jazz
with their post-hardcore punk style approach of euphoric togetherness.
Ferocious, spontaneous, explosive and aggressively lyric they've
established their groundbreaking duo with loads of shows and
a host of tremendous recordings. Now, with violinist/vocalist
C. Spencer Yeh (Burning Star Core) they've expanded
their sound even further. Great liner notes by John Olson

Free/tribal
percussion spatter 'n clatter duels with endlessly mutating
three chord sludge-riffage beneath thick, poison clouds
of delayed-out vocal groan. Truly CHOCK full of
manic bad-mood energy but maybe psych-droney and resin-soaked
enough for the new crop of crunchier noise-heads to nod
to as well. Electric guitars strung with duct tape
and drums equipped with hundred-year old heads are jettisoned
into deep space and dynamited, combusting so vividly that
the afterimages soak our retinas with mandalas of interwoven
earthworms and beer funnels for hours afterwards.
