YELLOW SWANS & BIRCHVILLE CAT MOTEL
imprec117 - CD - $11.99
Yellow Swans & Birchville Cat Motel is the the first
collaboration between these two underground phenomenons. Both groups
have emassed sturdy back catalogs and a great deal of critical acclaim.
This collaboration was recorded entirely in New Zealand both
live and in the studio.
Late 2005, Yellow Swans were blessed with the opportunity
to tour austrailia. As an added bonus, they were able to scam a
free week and a half long layover in New Zealand, so they could
check out the mythic noisescape of their teenagedom. They booked
a few shows (three or four before they got there, but ended up playing
seven) and most of those were set up by Mr. Birchville Cat Motel,
President of Lower Hutt who they ended up collaborating with live.
Before the Yellow Swans headed to Dunedin (where Pete
Swanson had a birthday party at the Arc Cafe) they were set
to play a late show at a club. In walks Campbell Kneale (Birchville
Cat Motel) wearing an Iron Maiden shirt and carrying
a guitar that had a destroyed cookie tin wedged under the strings.
After some opening groups it's time for the Yellow Swans/Birchville
Cat Motel jam and then Pete suggests they ease
into it. Campbell looks bummed at this suggestion when
suddenly Gabe suggests that just go for it. Campbell looks
happy at that suggestion so they did and clearly it worked out pretty
well because that's track two. Track one is a studio collaboration
recorded at Celebrate Psi Phenomenon.

Imagine yourself riding on cells coasting
through your body's veins. The sound of the heart grows stronger
like a beating drum as you're pulled closer. Suddenly, you're
embraced by this giant pulsating muscle and when you're finally
released back into the veins you can hear it's sound fading
slowly, but still growling with the same intensity that it
has beat with for eternity. Jugularis is the soundtrack
to this ride and like your heart it's packaged in blood: the
ultimate symbol of life and intensity.

Free/tribal
percussion spatter 'n clatter duels with endlessly mutating
three chord sludge-riffage beneath thick, poison clouds
of delayed-out vocal groan. Truly CHOCK full of
manic bad-mood energy but maybe psych-droney and resin-soaked
enough for the new crop of crunchier noise-heads to nod
to as well. Electric guitars strung with duct tape
and drums equipped with hundred-year old heads are jettisoned
into deep space and dynamited, combusting so vividly that
the afterimages soak our retinas with mandalas of interwoven
earthworms and beer funnels for hours afterwards.

Lunar
Eclipse was culled from over 30 hours of recordings taking
place, inedvertantly, on the equinox, lunar eclipse and winter
solstice of 2004 .The duo of Tom Carter (Charalambides) and
Robert Horton sound as if they are channeling the natural
power of these significant calender days into the music. They
both noticed something special was happening during the initial
recording session when they looked at a clock and realised that
they'd been playing for over 5 hours. |

.On this
double cd The Hototogisu masterfully create a dense sediment
of tetonic drone with the thickest layers of guitar, vocals
and electronics. Elaborately arranged, The Hototogisu are
obviously season sonic travelers, featuring the legendary Matthew
Bower (Skullflower, Sunroof!) and Marcia
Bassett (Double Leopards).
Ghosts Of The Sun is one enormous composition, nearing
2 hours in length, unfolded and nailed together in 7 movements.
Starting with a slow drone electronic crawl and climaxing with
crackling bone percussion buried howls of haunted minds,
Ghosts Of The Sun cries out from beneath an earthquake of
guitar feedback and distorion. Ghosts Of The Sun compresses
eternity, from the creation of humanity to it's own destruction,
into 7 parts on one double album. This is epic and total sonic
overload, by way of The Hototogisu. |
