 |
| Insignificance |
| $11.99 |
info, reviews & mp3 |
Insignificance
is the result of two years of intensive work and the culmination
of seven years of exploration and growth by this unusual and
powerful Brooklyn-based band. After the critcal success
of Barbez's self titled full length debut on Important
Records, they've returned with a groundbreaking sophmore
album and a new Theremin player who Bob Moog has
called the single greatest living Theremin player on
Earth. While Insignificance maintains Barbez's
trademark ethno-punk-cabaret, the compositions have become more
tight, more spacious, more frenetic and more explosive. Insignificance
has more of a compositional complexity and careful instrumentation
than Barbez's debut, promising to be a classic in this
burgeoning sub genre known as Punk-Cabaret.
"The most musically adventurous of the blooming "ethno-punk-cabaret"
movement (think Dresden Dolls and Gogol Bordello)"

Imagine
Kurt Weill chewing sausages with the Residents underneath
the Williamsburg Bridge while watching a Russian wedding dance
and you have some approximation of Barbez, Brooklyn's one-of-a-kind
post-cabaret punk chamber ensemble. Provoked by such musics
as Slavic folksong, Argentine tango, post-war classical and
pre-mtv punk, Barbez wrings these disparate worlds into the
band's own unique soundscape.

| JAMES BLACKSHAW |

True Believers |
| $11.99 |

|
When
UK-native James Blackshaw plays his 12-string, something
spiritual takes place. This unassuming 23 year-old is transformed
into a guitar god whose name belongs alongside the likes of
Jack Rose, Steffen Basho-Junghans, and Glenn
Jones.
In these part improvised and part written songs,
Blackshaw traverses between Eastern and Western scales;
simple and incredibly intricate picking patterns; waves of fast,
powerful rolls and glass-fragile harmonics. The album is occasionally
embellished with other instruments such as the Hindustani
tamboura and harmonium and a specially tuned psaltery
of Eastern-European origin called a Cymbala |

Good things come slow, and this is certainly the case for
Beequeen. Unlike so many others, who spit out albums every
week, the Beequeen takes a slow course. It took Frans de Waard
and Freek Kinkelaar two years to complete the recordings for
The Bodyshop, the successor to their much-acclaimed CD Ownliness
from 2002. Not because of laziness, band fights or drug abuse,
but simply because the whole thing had to be good. Every single
second, every single instrument and every single sound has
been examined and re-examined until the boys were satisfied
with the results.
This is Beequeens most instrumented album to date including
beautiful female vocals and a cover of Nick Drake's Black
Dog

Birds
Birds Birds In The World is the first full length from the
Japanese/Norweigan super-group The Birds. Comprised of
Cotton Casino of The Acid Mothers Temple and
Per Gisle Galaen of Sloburn/Del, The Birds
are reminiscent of other Norwegian groups like Deathprod,
Supersilent and Alog. Their unmistakeable and
unpredictable meld of psychedelic melodies, guitar noise, Eno-esque
synth dirge, Cale-drone, musique concrete and rock sets them
apart .
Cover artwork by Pete Fowler.
